The Future Of Postabargain

Update 17/06/2019

Thanks to everyone for their kind words and messages over the past couple of weeks. A few people were asking for at update about the site so thought I'd write this to let you all know what is going on. This is how I see things at the moment.

Since my original message there have been various offers of help in different areas from a number of people. A discord server was set up for these people to discuss ideas, it's also been suggested that this is opened up to the community. If you want to join in, come say hello and introduce yourself then if interested I can assign you a role to view and contribute to the various threads: Postabargain Discord Server.

There has been some great help from a small group of people recently, this has been really appreciated - but the site still can't really continue to run shifting the workload on to a couple of people. It'll result in burnout sooner rather than later, and we'll be back in the same boat. I'm still doing as much as I can but pretty soon I'm going to have a lot less time to focus on the site. So I'm trying to get more people involved so the site can continue to run as is.

If I'm concentrating on other work and commitments, the redesign which I think on discord we've agreed is the most important factor in taking the site forward, will be taking a back seat. I did manage to get 3 other people interested in trying to help with this but due to their own work and commitments the progress has been a lot slower than I had hoped. In fact it's pretty much ground to a halt at the moment. This is unfortunate but there is not really much I can do about this. Going forward, if the community are chipping in and the site is running ok without me, I can spend my spare time doing the redesign.

Whatever happens the site will continue to run, as long as there is a demand for it and the users support it, basically as long as it can cover it's running costs. I'll certainly put in an hour or so, here and there. But I can't put the equivalent to a full working day in to hunting for bargains. No one can. The only way I can see the site continuing to work as is, if a "many hands make light work" approach in terms of finding and posting bargains is adopted by the community.

So once again, if you cannot really spare any time to help out in a greater capacity, the best thing you can do is spend 5 mins looking for the best price on a game/product/pre-order you are interested in - and simply post it on the site to share it with the community. That is what the site was made for and hopefully it can continue.

It was suggested that a Patreon and Ko-fi account were both set up, this has been done. Didn't really expect anyone to be willing to contribute anything so massive thanks if you actually did, you blew me away. Thank you.

Until the next update. Be excellent to each other.

Looking for advice/opinions

Right, I've known this day was coming for a while...so here we go...

The site started out, and was always intended to be, community based and driven. There used to be an active forum, a lot of chat and a lot of people hunting and posting bargains. Things have changed quite dramatically here at PaB over the past few years, and also in terms of technology and how people search, chat and shop online.

The forum slowly died, the number of people posting/active on the site dropped quite dramatically. Postabargain went from a site run by a group, into a site run mainly by a handful of people, and now it's run mainly by one person, myself.

Unfortunately this has meant I've had to spend more and more time on the site trying to keep the content up to date and the standards high. I'm currently posting around 90% of the site content, running the social media/twitter and attempting to redesign the website. The redesign was what I really wanted to do, to make the site better, but because activity dropped so much I have had to redirect more and more of my time to the other areas. I have certainly really tried to keep things going.

This has been pretty draining, but also has left me with less time to concentrate on other work and commitments, subsequently my personal situation has suffered. The bottom line is things, and I, can't go on like this.

Postabargain has been with me for over 10 years now. It means a lot to me, which is why it's taken so long for me to acutally put these words online. Ultimately the purpose of this post is to see what the people that actually use the site think? I know more people use the site, than post bargains and leave comments.

  • Would you be sad if Postabargain went offline - or indifferent? Should I just let it go? Has it's time passed?
  • Is Postabargain a site/service you'd be willing to pay for in one form or another? With some additional funding, the site and redesign could continue.
  • Would you or someone you know, like to come onboard and attempt to freshen things up?
  • Would you like to partner up in one form or another?
  • Would you like to takeover completely?

I'm currently open to all suggestions. Please feel free to comment below or direct message me.

In the meantime, the site will remain online as long as possible. I'll still be around but the amount of time I put into the site has to drop quite significantly. I need to take a step back, which I expect in itself will be hard. If the site is going to die, I need to let it and not try to flog a dead horse. Anyway, if things are a bit quieter around here or if the site does go offline, this is why.

If you like the site, please do continue to use it. If you haven't posted for a while, next time you see a bargain please do feel free to post it. If you are a lurker that hasn't posted before please consider coming out of the shadows and getting involved.

I really hope Postabargain can go back to the community driven site it was before. If not, it has certainly been an adventure I'll never forget over these past 10 years!

If you'd like to become more involved, team up in some way or even takeover please feel free to contact me, my DMs are open.

Whatever happens in the coming months, thanks for following PaB and visiting the site over the years. I've met some wonderful people and friends through PaB and picked up a barrel load of bargains along the way! Thank you so much for being part of that. All the best.

Understandable that you are coming to an end with this site. I've been a lurker for years, but don't believe I ever posted a deal, apologies! I do hope you can bring in more help as it's great, thank you for all your dedication and saving me money on occasion.

This site and hotukdeals are the only ones I use. I favour this site for gaming deals as it's not cluttered with so many other deals. I understand it must be hard to keep up 24/7. Unless it's your main source of income, I'm not sure how you could devote the time. When there are other sources out there, I'm not sure charging would attract much support.

Just having a read through the replies and DMs, many more on twitter than on the site itself. Which maybe says something? I do realise the site itself is a big issue. Hence I have been trying to work on the redesign.

    Some suggestions been:

Lose the website and just use twitter. Prob wouldn't really lessen the workload - and not sure how other users would post but appreciate the suggestion :)

Get back on to Youtube/Reviews. I have always liked this idea but I do appreciate this all can be very time consuming. I recall doing a TLoU MP mini review and it took hours! I think for this to happen I'd need to gather a large team of writers/creators. Or for this site to join with an existing review site/team?

Have had a few replies from developers so will get talking to them and see if anything can be done.

Quite a few ppl have offered to help out and asked what they can do. TBH the simplest thing any one can do to help is, if they see a bargain post it on the site. Currently don't really need mods because there isn't a lot of stuff to approve.

Others have offered to help out with social media.

Although a handful of people have said they'd be happy to pay in some way, I have to agree I don't think the majority would do this when there are other similar sites out there. Suppose I could set up a Patreon for those interested but not sure what tiers could be offered that people would be interested in?

Anyway, whatever happens thanks for all the replies. Certainly made my day - and some DMS have been quite emotional to read!

And Val, hopefully you won't have to go anywhere :) Fingers crossed

What about trying to get a gaming night going at some point and streaming it? Less effort than Youtube videos. Although would a gaming night work as well as it used to with how everyone is split between xb1 and ps4 now days? Think that's one of the reasons the forum died down cause no one was getting together because of the split between consoles. Ending up being easier to just organise something straight through the console.

Possibly also everyone is playing different games now. I'm sure there was a time when basically everyone was playing the same games lol

For example, my backlog is so great I'm currently playing BOTW on Switch...

The gaming nights of old were great though. Very fond memories

The gaming nights were amazing. I remember playing battlefield 4 when it came out and it brought me, markysharky and stranger things together to have formed a strong friendship lasting years.

  • ParkoVanB

I think the one problem with gaming nights is that once you get past the squad/team numbers of 4-8, you need to split up into smaller groups. Defo fun though.

I do recall Destiny having Team A and Team B. On and the bants about which team was better :)

I did set up a discord a year or so ago for gaming nights, but it felt like a bit of a chore to keep it going, reminded me of the forum in it's dying days. So ended up closing it down :(

I do like the idea of steaming as opposed to making youtube videos, but tbh I'm not sure I'm chatty enough to pull it off. I often play in silence with the odd sweary word coming out haha

But that would make it watchable park, one of the most amusing parts of those gaming nights was waiting until people started to get annoyed and the ya wee b*****ds would soon start flying down the mic. :)

Instead of a Patroen could you not just request donations? The guy who dors FMScout for example has been living off those for years. May only be £2 a year for example but that may make a difference to you. Loyalty will hopefully keep things going.

Issue with Patroen and tiers is what you offer in return might ultimately make more work which is the issue you have already. I used to post loads of offers i found but unfortunately work changed and i havent the time.

Are there any incentives you could offer for people to post? Nothing massive but may encourage more. Just spitballing ideas

I love the site and been a lurker more than a poster. I generally follow on twitter as I too struggle for time and money myself so canít help out financially and is the reason I always look for bargains - even though I generally canít afford them either lol!

Usually the deals are posted before I find them however I have posted a couple in the past when I do on rare occasions find some.

I would be very sad should you stop what you are doing - as I favour this over hotukdeals as Iím more into games than the other clobber on there.

As someone suggested, would closing the site help with workload and only concentrate on social media? Using one place to post to several social sites at once? Everything is social media these days and Iím sure you can get dedicated places that post to the most popular places at once!? People could send you bargains and you could retweet them or copy them and put them in your own words etc? Although Iím not sure how this would bring in income for yourself which is obviously something that needs to be worked out.

Whatever your choice, I understand and wish you luck whatever you decide ultimately. Thank you for everything!

I do hope the site doesnt go away as its the only deal site i use.

I do understand how you've come to this situation though as my time too over the years has become more and more taken up by life things which means i slowly dropped off posting bargains or even looking for them. I rarely even buy anything anymore either but when i do pick that rare purchase i always come here to scourer for the best price and in those times i try to post better ones if i find them.

Whilst i dont know how exactly things can change i would say is get help from the communityto help to lessen the load of running the site, like social interactions perhaps in seeking out people looking for deals without directly asking PaB, maybe at least one mod to help approve bargains and such to free you up to do other things separate from that.

I dont think (as you've said) that there's a viable option to monetise users using the site other than perhaps a 'pro' subscription that offered more bargain notifications (limiting non'pro'), priority bargain approval, maybe ad free. But then that sort of subscription might have the opposite effect which you dont want as the main thing people come for is posting ans seeking bargains and you dont want to push them away.

Iíd be incredibly sad to see PaB go. Itís the only bargain site I use and I check in pretty much every time I open a browser, so several times most days. I use the site so much that I donít tend to go looking for best prices myself, rather just search/wait for something on here, which is why I donít post all that often.

As for reviews/teaming with an existing review site, I may be able to help there. What exactly do you have in mind? Unique content for PaB? Shared content between sites? Contacts to source review copies? Check out https://www.passthecontroller.co.uk and feel free to get in touch.

Can you drop me a DM on twitter/email Sam? Certainly interested in discussing further.

Had a few people offering to help out. Some ppl offering to help but they aren't exactly sure what they can do. Not entirely sure myself. I think I'm going to set up a Discord chat for people who would like to help in one form or another. Get everyone together, have a chat, do some brainstorming and see what can be done :)

If you'd like to be involved DM me on twitter - or let me know how else to get in touch. Thanks everyone!

Following on from above a discord server has been set up for those that offered to help out in any way to help keep the site going. Whether that be posting, moderating, social media, web dev or ideas and general discussion / input on the site itself.

If you want to be involved in any way let me know here or via DM/email and I'll send you an invite

I'm extremely saddened to read all this. I totally understand everything you are saying. I used to be able to post often here but now I have two children and with work, I struggle to find time for anything at all! I still visit daily and will continue to do so. If I find anything I will be sure to post. I feel like my story will be very similar to alot of users who previously used to be more active here. I like the idea of expanding to try and attract more people here with some sort of gaming content. It would help a lot if there was something going on here that simular sites don't have. I know others have said exactly the same thing but I would be happy to help and also not sure of how. Feel free to give me a shout if you need help with anything.
