Ghost in the Shell (Repackaged Blu-ray Pre-order) - £8.10 Using Code
    Wed Feb 15, 2017 9:42 am
    Voucher Code: SIGNUP10

EDIT: Also £8.49 at Base ^PvB

    http://www.base.com/buy/product/ghost-in-the-shell-blu-ray/dgc-manb8804.htm

The year is 2029, the world is made borderless by the net; augmented humans who live in virtual environments. Watched over by law enforcement agents that are able to download themselves into super-powered, crime busting mecha. The ultimate secret agent of the future is not human, has no physical body and can travel freely through the information highways of the world. Hacking and manipulating whatever, whomever and whenever required

The skilful blending of drawn animation and computer-generated imagery excited anime fans when this science fiction mystery was released in 1995: many enthusiasts believe Ghost suggests what the future of anime will be, at least in the short term. The film is set in the not-too-distant future, when an unnamed government uses lifelike cyborgs or "enhanced" humans for undercover work. One of the key cyborgs is The Major, Motoko Kusanagi, who resembles a cross between The Terminator and a Playboy centrefold. She finds herself caught up in a tangled web of espionage and counterespionage as she searches for the mysterious superhacker known as "The Puppet Master."

Mamoru Oshii directs with a staccato rhythm, alternating sequences of rapid-fire action (car chases, gun battles, explosions) with static dialogue scenes that allow the characters to sort out the vaguely mystical and rather convoluted plot. Kusanagi's final quote from I Corinthians suggests that electronic evolution may compliment and eventually supplant organic evolution. The minor nudity, profanity, and considerable violence would earn Ghost in the Shell at least a PG rating. --Charles Solomon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

'The Witch' (2015) follows a puritan family living on a farm in New England in 1630. When their baby son suddenly goes missing, the superstitious parents William (Ralph Ineson) and Katherine (Kate Dickie) begin to wrongly suspect their daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) is responsible and capable of witchcraft. When further sinister things start to happen, suspicion and fear begins to tear the family apart and drives them to commit a series of heinous acts.

In 'Crimson Peak' (2015) 19th-century author Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) meets and falls in love with the wealthy and mysterious Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston). However, after Edith moves into Crimson Peak, the Sharpe family home, to live with Thomas and his sister Lady Lucille (Jessica Chastain), she realises that there is much more to the Sharpe family and their house than meets the eye.

In 'Maggie' (2015), when Maggie Vogel (Abigail Breslin) gets stuck outside after curfew, she is bitten by a zombie and becomes infected with the Necroambulist virus. Her father Wade (Arnold Schwarzenegger) goes searching for her and finds her in a quarantined zone of a hospital. Her doctor agrees to release her but warns Wade that before Maggie completely transforms he will have to place her back in quarantine. However, when Maggie's condition eventually begins to worsen, Wade refuses to return her to hospital, leaving the family facing some important decisions.

In 'The Visit' (2015), while their mother is on holiday, young siblings Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) and Becca (Olivia DeJonge) are sent to stay with their grandparents. After being warned not to leave their bedroom after 9.30pm and suspecting that something is amiss in the house, the kids start to investigate. However, after finding their grandparents behaving strangely, a number of disturbing events occur which leave the pair facing a fight to survive.

Finally, in 'Unfriended' (2015), one year after their classmate Laura (Heather Sossaman) committed suicide after an embarrassing video of her was circulated around the school, six friends log on to Skype to take part in a group chat. But when someone starts using Laura's old account and appears to know the full details about the video and the identities of those responsible for its distribution, the six friends begin to fear for their lives as whoever it is starts to torment them inside their homes.

    ==============================

    Season 1

A new drama series, True Detective focuses on Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and “Rust” Cohle (Matthew McConaughey), two detectives and former partners who worked in Louisiana’s Criminal Investigation Division in the mid-1990s. In 2012, for reasons not immediately revealed, the two are interviewed separately by investigators about their most notorious case: the macabre 1995 murder of a prostitute by a possible serial killer with disturbing occult leanings. As they look back on the case, Hart and Cohle’s personal backstories and often-strained relationship become a major focal point.

    Season 2

Written and created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective returns with a new case and a new cast. A bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California. Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County. Vince Vaughn is Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life's work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly) struggles with his choices and her own.

Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff's detective often at odds with the system she serves, while Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol, who discovers a crime scene which triggers an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars.

    10,000 BC
    Format: Blu-ray

To anyone who has ever yearned to see woolly mammoths in full stampede across the Alps, 10,000 BC can be heartily recommended. There's also a flock of "terror birds" (lethal ostriches on steroids) in a steaming jungle only a splice away from the heroes' snow-dusted alpine habitat. And lo, somewhere in the vastness of the North African desert lies a city whose slave inhabitants alternately teem like the crowds in Quo Vadis during the burning of Rome and trudge in hieratically menacing formations like the workers in Metropolis. That's pretty much it for the cool stuff. Setting movies in prehistoric times is dicey. Apart from the "Dawn of Man" sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey, only Quest for Fire makes the grade, and its creators had the good sense to limit the dialogue to grunts and moans. 10,000 BC boasts a quasi-biblical narrator (Omar Sharif) and characters who speak in formed, albeit uninteresting, sentences (including a New Age–y "I understand your pain"). But let no one say the storytelling isn't primitive. The narrator speaks of "the legend of the child with the blue eyes" and bingo, here's the kid now. When, grown up to be Camilla Belle, she's carried off by "four-legged demons" (guys on horseback to you). The neighbour boy (Steven Strait) who hankers to make myth with her leads a rescue mission into the great unknown world beyond their mountaintop. His name is D'Leh, which is Held, the German for "knight," spelled backward. So yes, there is some hidden meaning after all. 10,000 BC is the latest triumph of the ersatz from writer-director Roland Emmerich. Like Stargate (1994), Independence Day (1996), and The Day After Tomorrow (2004) before it, it's shamelessly cobbled together out of every movie Emmerich can remember to pilfer from (though to be fair, the section in pre-ancient Egypt harks back to his own Stargate). Emmerich's saving grace is that his films' cheesiness is so flagrant, his narratives so geared for instant gratification, he can seem like a kid simultaneously improvising and acting out a story in his backyard: "P'tend there's this alien ... p'tend maybe he came from Atlantis or something...." Just don't p'tend it has anything to do with real movie-making. --Richard T. Jameson

    10,000 BC Blu-Ray
    Format: Blu-ray

From Roland Emmerich, director of Independance Day and The Day After Tomorrow comes 10,000 BC, a sweeping odyssey into a mythical age of prophesies and gods, when spirits rule the land and mighty mammoths shake the earth. In a remote mountain tribe, the young hunter D'Leh (Steven Strait) has found his heart's passion - the beautiful Evolet (Camilla Belle). But when a band of mysterious warlords raid his village and kidnap Evolet, D'Leh leads a small group of hunters to pursue the warlords to the end of the world to save her. As they venture into unknown lands for the first time, the group discovers there are civilizations beyond their own and that mankind's reach is far greater than they ever knew. At each encounter the group is joined by other tribes who have been attacked by the slave raiders, turning D'Leh's once-small band into an army.   Languages: English, French, Spanish Subtitles: English, French, Spanish Approx Run Time 109Mins

Japan, 1844: as the era of the samurai winds to a close, a sadistic young lord uses his powerful political ties to commit heinous atrocities against the common people. Recognizing the dangers to both his country and its citizens should the lord manage to gain any more power, a concerned government official secretly recruits 13 of the most skilled swordsmen he can find to defeat the evil lord once and for all. But reaching their target won't be easy, because the elusive lord is constantly flanked by legions of fearless bodyguards. Realizing that the bodyguards would decimate his modest task force in a traditional battle, the assassins' leader (Koji Yakusho) lays an ingenious trap that will give his men the upper hand, and waits patiently for their prey to take the bait.
